The Retromops is an intelligent, bright and cheerful little companion dog, which impresses not only with other species, but also with other animals such as cats, chickens, rabbits or horses thanks to its pronounced philanthropy and a high tolerance threshold.

He is both a clingy cuddler who likes to share the sofa with his family, but thanks to his regained physical fitness, he also loves long walks or longer hikes. He is also not averse to a jogging tour ...

The Retromops is a well-proportioned dog with a harmonious physique, a deep, strong chest and an open belly line. A longer back and neck section compared to the standard pug guarantees better mobility and allows the dog to groom itself.

The connective tissue is firmer, which reduces the formation of wrinkles and jowls and internal structures such as the cartilaginous respiratory tract, but also ligaments and joints become more resilient.

The Retromops barrel is strong, straight and with good ground clearance; according to the standard, his tail should be curled twice if possible.

The Retromops have a blunt, square muzzle, which must not look depressed. His jaw is wide and strong. What is desired is a straight bridge of the nose with as little pronounced nasal fold as possible, which does not require any care.

Particular attention is paid in breeding to open nostrils in the nasal sponge. The ears are relatively small and fall forward. Button ear or rose ear are allowed. The roundish to oval eyes, which can be amber to deep brown, are well embedded in the facial skull, which reduces the risk of injury.

The fur of the retro mops is short, smooth and shiny. All shades of beige, silver gray and black are permitted. According to the breeding regulations, dogs with piebald or current (brindle) are also allowed. In addition, all color changes are accepted that are not "harmful to health" (cf. the "Merle staining" based on a genetic defect). The ears, the mask, the nails and the eel line should be as dark as possible.

The Retromops is a very easy-care little companion. His nasal crease is minimal and, as mentioned above, requires no special care.

The short fur cannot become matted and can be easily cleaned with a brush or a damp cloth.

With sufficient employment, the intelligent, easy-going little dog feels just as comfortable in the city as in the country. However, it is important to keep in touch with his social partner, the person in whose presence the retromops feels most comfortable. This prohibits an attitude of working full-time, unless there is the possibility to take the dog to work.

The Retromops are suitable for many leisure activities because of their joy of playing, their fitness and their ability to learn, as long as they do not degenerate into real competitive sports.

There are retros that accompany their owners on hiking rides as well as those who enjoy agility. Thanks to their friendly, people-related nature, we also find the dogs in animal-assisted therapy.

Retro pugs can be raised easily and without pressure and love to please their people. The hunting instinct of the Retromops is just as little as that of any other small companion dog and can be contained by a little upbringing.
